Webster STRONG: Building Team Resilience
The Webster County Health Unit is a value-driven, nurturing and community-focused team. Scott Allen, Administrator, recognized the strengths of his team while recognizing the challenges confronting the team were not like any experienced previously. He wisely sought an in-service training to enhance his team’s resilience.
The training, conducted by Impact Leader, focused on the characteristics of team resilience: shared purpose, effective communication, supportive work culture, psychological safety and problem-solving mindset. A template/process for intentionally developing a team resilience plan going forward was shared.
The team shared insights about body language as part of effective communication, reviewed the impact of their recently developed mission, vision and values and discussed psychological safety at length, including how to organically assess the organization’s level of psychological safety.
There was also discussion of the inter-relationship of personal resilience upon team resilience and the need for ongoing, sustained personal care. The day ended with a brief foray into futures/foresight methods as one approach to problem-solving not commonly used in public health.
